What is Dry Needling?
Dry Needle Therapy is used by medical professionals to treat musculoskeletal pain and movement issues. During this treatment, a provider inserts thin, sharp needles through your skin to treat underlying myofascial trigger points.
How Does It Work?
When a muscular trigger point is stimulated by a needle, blood rushes to the area, flushing the affected muscle and releasing tension. When your brain identifies the prick sensation, it releases endorphins which naturally help alleviate the pain.
Dry Needle Therapy FAQ's
Depending on the tightness and trauma of the muscle, you may experience slight to moderate discomfort during your treatment. Many patients do not feel the needle on the skin, but do feel the needle once it's come in contact with the trigger point. At Flynn Chiropractic, we do everything we can to make your experience as enjoyable and effective as possible.
Many patients will experience relief of pain and improved mobility of the muscle almost immediately following a treatment. For others, a few additional treatments are required before they feel improvement. Patients with the following conditions have reported relief from Dry Needling:
-
Joint & disk issues
-
Tendonitis
-
Migraine and tension-type headaches
-
Jaw and mouth problems, such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders
-
Whiplash
-
Pelvic pain
...And many more.
There are certain groups of people who shouldn’t receive dry needling. Providers don’t recommend the procedure for children under the age of 12 because it can be painful. You and your child will both need to provide consent, and you should consider other less invasive options first.
If you're unsure if you are a good candidate for Dry Needling, call 919-676-6556 and we can help identify whether or not you qualify for the treatment.
Other groups who should consult with their physician before receiving dry needling include people who:
-
Are pregnant
-
Aren’t able to understand the treatment
-
Are very afraid of needles (trypanophobia)
-
Have compromised immune systems
-
Have just had surgery
-
Are on blood thinners
Acupuncturists insert very thin needles into specific points on the body based on their knowledge from TCM to stimulate energy flow within the body, whereas Dry Needle Therapy uses thicker needles that target trigger points within muscles to relieve tension and decrease pain.

Patient Testimonials
Dry Needle Therapy
I recently sought treatment from Dr. Reid for chronic shoulder and neck pain, and the outcome was highly impressive. Reid's proficiency in dry needling was instrumental in my recovery.
He conducted a comprehensive assessment of my condition, provided a clear explanation of the dry needling procedure, and addressed my inquiries with expertise. The precision of their treatments yielded immediate pain relief.
What stood out was how Reid took the time to walk me through the various muscles they were targeting during each session. His precise knowledge of anatomy and muscular structure instilled confidence in the treatment process.
If you are even remotely considering dry needling, I wholeheartedly endorse Dr. Reid!
